For US travelers:


US travelers need a tourist visa (L visa) or a business visa (M visa) to enter China. Since January 2024, the application process has been made easier for US citizens. The Chinese consulate no longer requires proof of a round-trip air ticket, hotel reservation, itinerary, or invitation letter for most tourist visa applications. For EU travelers


Citizens of many EU countries are eligible for 15-day visa-free stays in China. This policy applies to 15 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and others, until December 31, 2025. If you are from a country not included in the list or if you plan to stay longer than 15 days, you will need to apply for a tourist visa.


Which countries are eligible for China’s 15-day visa-free stay?


China offers a 15-day visa-free stay for citizens of 23 countries, including a new unilateral visa-free policy that applies to 15 additional countries until December 31, 2025. The countries eligible for this exemption are:

  • Austria
  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Malaysia
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Poland
  • Spain
  • Switzerland

These countries can visit China for up to 15 days continuously without a visa. This policy is part of China’s effort to make travel easier, but be sure to check if your nationality qualifies before your trip.

Travellers from select countries, including Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, can enter China without a visa for 144 hours (china 144 visa-free policy). This regulation applies to travellers in transit to a foreign nation. You can stay in certain areas, including as Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, for up to 144 hours (6 days) without a visa. Other countries have a 72-hour transit policy as well. To qualify for this policy, you must provide evidence of travel documentation such as connecting flights.
